Northern Marianas College is seeking funding to compensate an instructor teaching the Japanese language to high school students.

NMC president Antonio Deleon Guerrero said Sachiko Adachi was hired by the college under the understanding that the Public School System would reimburse NMC for the cost of her salary and benefits.

However, PSS informed the college in December 2004 that it would be terminating the agreement effective Jan. 21, 2005.

“As there are still students enrolled in her classes at Marianas High School, the college has agreed to continue and allow Ms. Adachi to complete this school year with MHS. Unfortunately, this presents costs that are not currently funded for under continuing resolution levels,” Deleon Guerrero said.

The total cost of retaining Adachi is $41,874. The computation covers Adachi’s salary and benefits beginning Feb. 18, 2005 through Sept. 30, 2005.

According to Deleon Guerrero, MHS principal James Denight and Adachi have already discussed the issue with Gov. Juan N. Babauta. The governor, he added, had agreed to provide funding to the college for the language instructor.

Deleon Guerrero expressed hope however that the administration would expedite the reprogramming of the funds into NMC’s account for drawdown.
