Stiff competition in McDonald’s athletics
Although still in the early stages, the qualifying time trials leading to the McDonald’s All Schools Track and Field Championships had already has its fare share of stiff competition.
Chacha Oceanview Junior High School’s Trevor Ogumoro is currently having his way in the 13-and-under category, leading the boys competition in the 100m, 200m, and long jump events, while Grace Christian Academy’s Rachel Rangamar currently tops the girls shotput and discus, however, none of the six available slots for Saipan athletes will be officially filled until the end of the trials on April 29.
Ogumoro sped away from the pack in the 100m, crossing the finish line more than a second ahead of the next finisher at 13.44 seconds. Daniel Javier of GCA and Joo Min Jung of Saipan Community School currently hold the No. 2 and 3 spots with times of 14.65 and 15.65, while Tanapag Elementary School’s Jude Charfauros and Dodet Feliciano follow after clocking in at 16.74 and 17.28,
Ogumoro’s 200m performance, meanwhile, featured a time of 28.56 seconds. He is followed by Branson Kladikm of TES and Jung, who currently sport times of 29.04 and 29.47. Javier (30.47), Esebei Arurang ( 30.97) of SCS, and Eugene Ogumoro of Chacha (32.25) cap the current leaders.
Trevor was also the lone competitor in the long jump, recording a leap of 4.77 meters.
Jackie Wonenberg of Hopwood Junior High School currently holds the best time in the girls’ 100m, clocking in at 14.4 seconds, while teammates Maria Con-Ui and Kayla Atalig follow with times of 15.19 and 15.81. Liberty Garde and Hermina Kelly of TES are fourth and fifth with times of 17.04 and 17.94, while Nikita Cabrera (18.49) of GCA rounds up the top six.
Daveyann Iguel of TES leads the 200m after completing the sprint in 39.81 seconds, while Cabrera and Kelley follow with times of 40.03 and 43.19.
For her part, Rangamar was the lone competitor in the shot put and discus, recording distances of 5.27 meters in the shot put and 15.99 meters in the discus.
Athletes from various schools on Saipan are currently taking part in the trials in hopes of securing one of the six available slots in each event. Two slots have been reserved for Tinian and Rota.
The trials and the May 7 Championships are sponsored by McDonald’s Saipan and organized by the Northern Mariana Islands Track and Field Federation. All activities are held at the Oleai Sports Complex track and field facility.
