Firm granted limited land use permit at Charlie Dock
The Commonwealth Ports Authority has approved a limited land use permit to a utility company seeking to operate at the Port of Saipan.
Pacific Utility and Communications Inc. was offered an 18-month permit to use a total of 1,700 sq.m. of seaport property, which includes two buildings within the vicinity of the Mobil station at Charlie Dock.
The monthly rent was set at $1,600 for the entire property.
PUC, formerly called Key Point Saipan Ltd., previously had a five-year lease agreement with CPA. The lease expired in November 2004.
Last month, the company formally asked CPA for an initial 18-month permit, with an option to renew for another 18 months.
But Saipan seaport manager Lee Cabrera said the ports authority could not enter into a longer lease agreement, as that would be in violation of its master plan, which requires that sufficient space be provided for access into the main dock.
Pacific Utility and Communication is engaged in providing telecommunication supply and construction services. It operates in the CNMI and Guam, doing business primarily with Verizon Micronesia as sub-contractor.
PUC is also engaged in shipping, receiving, storing, and distributing products relating to communication utility hardware and materials. (Agnes E. Donato)
