DPS-Tinian employees get long awaited raises
After many years of hearing the words “austerity measures,” employees of the Department of Public Safety’s Fire and Police Department on Tinian had a little more to smile about yesterday after the announcement of an across-the-board promotions and pay increases.
DPS-Tinian director Pedro Cruz, along with Tinian Mayor Francisco M. Borja, personally congratulated the DPS staff on their promotions and pay hikes in a ceremony held at the Tinian Courthouse. Rows of men and women in blue waited for their names to be called up to be congratulated by Borja and Cruz.
In a short speech, Borja praised the officers for their hard work and dedication to their job. He also thanked the officers’ families for the love, understanding and support that they have shown the DPS men and women through the years.
Joey Charfaurus of the Tinian Mayor’s Office said that the mayor knows what the officers and their families have gone through since, at one time, he was also a police officer prior to getting into politics.
Borja told the officers that during his tenure as senator, he had introduced a measure that would have give the officers 25 percent for hazardous duty “since the second you put on that uniform you are risking your lives for the people.” The measure was defeated by two votes.
Cruz thanked all the officers for having the patience to wait for the pay raise all these years and reiterated that the promotion with a raise in salary was long overdue. “I fought for many years to get you what you deserved but at the same time I refused for accept a promotion without a pay increase.”
