Little League embarks on new venture
Calling all boys and girls who were interested in playing baseball this season but were too young to get on a team, the Saipan Little League Baseball Association is opening up a new Tee Ball league, a Minor League, and a girls’ fast-pitch softball league.
The SLLBA will be hosting a video briefing for all of the potential players, parents, coaches, and volunteers tonight at Chacha Ocean View Middle School in Kagman at 5:30pm.
That is just the beginning, as the SLLBA takes it to the next level tomorrow morning when they host a clinic for boys and girls between the ages of 5-8 years old at the American Memorial Park. Beginning at 9am, the youngest players will receive the basics to get them ready for the new season until 11am, when they break up into teams and play a scrimmage game.
The players will be assessed by their future coaches and guided along the way from volunteers such as the new commissioner of the league John Reyes and deputy commissioner Joey Dela Cruz.
Reyes said that the players will have a great time on the field, and that he believes that the future of the CNMI can only benefit as well.
“Our kids will be a step ahead with the new program because when they get to the Little League level they will already know the basics about hitting and fielding,” he said.
After the scrimmage game, the clinic will break for lunch before the girls’ fast-pitch softball takes the field at 1pm. Interested girls between the ages of 11-18 are eligible for the underhanded fast-pitch league, and are encouraged to take part in the new activity.
The president of the SLLBA Joe Salas also announced the arrival of equipment for the young players yesterday, as the Tee-Ball league will be receiving helmets, gloves, bats, balls, and tees for the fledgling organization from Guam.
