The CNMI baseball team has been spending a lot of time on the field in preparation for the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games, but they will move to a new venue for the next stage in the preparation process as they host their weekend long fundraising softball tournament and homerun derby.

All of the training the players have been doing has got them in shape for the games in Palau, and they should get a little peace of mind following this tournament, as it should help them pay for the airfare and accommodations as well.

So far, the team has organized two hot lunch sales along beach road to try to close the gap, and while they have brought in a decent amount of money, they still needed to raise the lion’s share of the funds.

The tournament gets underway tonight at 6pm, as 12 teams will show their support for the all-stars by launching balls out of the park during tournament play, as well as during the homerun derby. The action will continue all weekend long at the Oleai Sports Complex, as the champion will be crowned on Sunday, May 1.

CNMI All-Star and tournament director Joey Dela Cruz said that the teams will be playing for the tournament trophy, but the winner will also get all of the bragging rights of being the top team in Saipan.

While the tournament will surely help the team raise funds, Dela Cruz said that the community doesn’t have to play to support the team.

“We appreciate any support to help us on our way, and you don’t only have to enter a team to help us out,” he said.
