The pending house numbering project being spearheaded by the Saipan Mayor’s Office is now being followed up by the mayor himself so they could begin implementing it.

Mayor Juan B. Tudela recently wrote to the Department of Public Works, saying he is happy with recent news reports that the department is now in its final phase of inspection with regards to the street signs on Saipan, particularly the Kagman area.

With this development, he said it is time to look ahead at the remaining task, which is the numbering of houses and buildings.

Rosel Torres, acting manager for DPW’s highway branch, said earlier that his office is just waiting for the Saipan Mayor’s Office’s go-signal on the building and house numbering project. He had also said that there is no funding available to execute the project.

Henry K. Pangelinan and Associates finished the design for the numbering project in 2002.

Tudela said in his letter that, according to the Department of Finance, the remaining balance for this project is $159,244. he said this means the project must be completed as early as possible.

He also attached in his letter a copy of Saipan Local Law 11-3, which states that after the signs have been posted, “DPW shall deliver written notification to all individuals and affected entities of the address number that their building is assigned.”

According to DPW project engineer Freddy Cataluna, the house numbering project would be an advantage for the CNMI community as people would now be getting their mails conveniently delivered to their household, eliminating the need to go to the post office or renting a P.O. box.

Maeda Pacific Corp. office engineer Cleto Samonte said yesterday that his group, together with DPW, has been busy with the final inspection of the street signs mounted all over Saipan. He said the inspection might take another week to be finalized.

Some 2,300 streets signs were installed end of last year.

Cataluna said the final inspections they are conducting are those signs included in the change order. The change order was to add the Kagman area in the project.
