Bigger recycling site opens
After investing half a million dollars, Basula Produkto opened Thursday morning a new and bigger recycling site at the MAEDA/ERICCO office site in Tanapag.
A joint venture between ERICCO Enterprises and MAEDA Pacific Corp., Basula Produkto aims to provide the CNMI a recycling site that responds to the waste disposal needs of the CNMI.
Run by ERICCO president Eric Cruz, he said his company is a local CNMI firm engaged in recycling, waste management and construction. He said this is their way of supporting a clean environment on Saipan.
Thomas J. Nielsen, president of MAEDA Pacific Corp. on Saipan, said he is elated to be involved in a business where locals are involved. He said the project aims to protect the environment and provide jobs in the Commonwealth. “And hopefully make a little bit of money,” he added.
Lt. Gov. Diego Benavente, Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela, Division of Environmental Quality director John I. Castro and staff, Department of Lands and Natural Resources Secretary Richard Seman, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Juan L. Babauta, special advisor for CIP management Charles D. Jordan and other government officials witnessed the ribbon cutting Thursday morning.
MAEDA Road president Matsugu Okabe and vice-president Hachiro Kakuno flew in from Japan for the grand opening.
Castro said his office has been an active supporter of recycling activities. “I’m glad this facility is here and I will encourage others to come in and recycle their wastes here.” Cruz said that the recycling office would greatly help lessen the amount of trash being brought to the landfill, thereby extending its lifespan. He also said the recycling center will minimize importing raw materials as some products could be produced through recycling.
Basula Produkto now accepts the following items for recycling at the new site: aluminum, brass, copper, paper, card board, glass, tires and metals.
