Gov. Juan N. Babauta has urged residents and visitors to observe Tourism Month by participating in ceremonies and activities.

In a proclamation designating May as Tourism Month, Babauta stressed the significance of the tourism industry to the Commonwealth. The industry, he noted, contributes not only to economic prosperity and employment, but to international trade and understanding as well.

“Regardless of the course of human events, tourism remains a mainstay in the Northern Mariana Islands due to its clean, pure, safe, and fun lifestyle. As people throughout the world become more aware of the cultural and recreational resources and lifestyle available in the Northern Marianas, tourism can play an even greater role in the lives of our people,” Babauta said.

On Thursday night, the Marianas Visitors Authority kicked off the month long celebration with cocktail party at the DFS Saipan Boutique Gallery.

The festivities will continue as Tinian holds the annual San Jose Fiesta through Sunday.

Other activities lined up for the Tourism Month include the annual Ayuda Fun Run, the 37th voyage of the Wakai Nekko No Kai group from Japan, the Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival and Beer Garden, a photo contest, and the Escape from Managaha.

“We are very excited about all the events that will be taking place during CNMI Tourism Month. These events will help to further promote the awareness of the CNMI as a travel destination,” said MVA managing director Vicky Benavente.

“It is also to recognize the collaborative efforts of the visitor industry, which include the community at large, the residents who recognize the value of our culture, music and language, as well as those who support MVA Events and activities such as the MVA members and public agencies,” she added.
