Summer camp still needing instructors
The Office of the Special Assistant for Youth Affairs still needs more summer camp instructors for the upcoming Youth Bazaar Summer Camp from June 18 to July 23.
Special assistant Florence Kirby said the youth center is looking for more volunteers to assist them in making the summer of the CNMI youth worthwhile and productive. She said they still need instructors for visual arts, music, theater, dance, and other fields. They are also looking for camp directors, youth camp assistants, skilled professionals, traditional and modern artists and weavers, sports coordinators, camp cooks and others.
The Youth Bazaar Summer Camp will be held at the Hopwood Junior High School’s beach ground. The summer camp is inviting all youth aging eight to 18 years old.
So far, Kirby said that only 20 children ages eight to 11 have registered. These children paid $50 for the five-week summer camp. She expressed surprise, though, that children ages 12 to 17 have not registered yet, considering the summer camp for this age bracket is free of charge.
She also said there are more teenagers applying for volunteer work, rather than participating in the camp. Kirby earlier said the camp expects to draw more than 300 participants.
Kirby is encouraging all other community members who are members of any ethnic group to participate in the camp and share with the participants the arts and crafts of their native countries.
The camp is charging a minimal fee to cover the children’s insurance and meals for the duration of the summer camp, she said. The fee is $50 for age eight to 11 and free for age 12 to 17.
She said these children would have fun and be more productive during the school break. They would learn music, modern and cultural dances, sports, cooking, carpentry and many other things.
The Youth Affairs Office, said Kirby, will also be participating in the upcoming Liberation Day celebration and the output of the summer camp will be displayed during the celebration.
