Acting Legislative Bureau director Jose A. Bermudes has stepped down, prompting the Legislature to appoint Senate legislative assistant George N. Camacho to the post in an acting capacity.

Senate President Joaquin G. Adriano and Vice Speaker Timothy Villagomez jointly made the appointment of Camacho in a May 17 memorandum.

“He is empowered to conduct all Legislative Bureau business in his acting capacity. He will serve in this acting capacity until a permanent director is appointed by the legislative leadership,” said the two officials.

In an interview, Villagomez said that Bermudes, who is the House’ chief legal counsel, has volunteered to step down to concentrate on his legal work.

“He wanted to go back to his original post. He did a great job at LB. He feels that he needs more time as legal counsel now,” he said.

The LB director position has been vacant since the termination of employment contract of its former chief, Walter Macaranas, and the death of its deputy director, Placido Tagabuel, last January.

The Senate earlier said that a vacancy announcement was issued resulting in five individuals submitting their applications. They are Patrick E. Seman, Francine G. Sablan, Janice Marie A. Tenorio, Chong Won, and Glenna S. Palacios.
