HPO night at Garapan Street Market

Historic Preservation Week kicks off at the Garapan Street Market tonight with a full slate of activities and entertainment, include a giveaway of books about Northern Marianas history and culture.

For every $6 receipt from street market vendors issued that night and submitted to the Historic Preservation Office booth, the office will give away one book valued at $5-25, while supplies last.

The evening will include entertainment by traditional Carolinian group Uraali, Amberlyn Mendiola, Candy Taman, San Antonio School Cultural Dancers, and Saipan Southern High School. Other activities include contests with prizes for coconut husking, coconut grating, coconut frond weaving, hot pepper eating, and cultural trivia.

The Historic Preservation Office will also display artifacts and information on Northern Marianas history. Information will also be provided on recruitment of volunteers to help open two new historic sites on Saipan, Laulau Kattan Latte site and ChaCha Latte Site in Kagman.

Over 400 books are expected to be distributed throughout the night, including Tiempon I Manmafo’na: Ancient Chamorro Culture and History of the Northern Mariana Islands, Carolinians in the Mariana Islands, Saipan: The ethnology of a War-Devastated Island, The Chamorros of the Mariana Islands, History of the Mission in the Mariana Islands: 1667-1673, An Accountant of the Corvette L’Uranie’s Sojourn at the Mariana Islands, 1819, and over 10 other titles.

The Garapan Street Market is held every Thursday from 6pm to 10pm at American Memorial Park and offers a wide selection of foods, imported and local crafts, novelties and free live entertainment.
