Capitol Hill field still off limits
The new Capitol Hill Junior League Baseball Field remains off limits to the public, according to Division of Sports and Recreation director Tony Rogolifoi.
During an interview yesterday, Rogolifoi said individuals have already begun utilizing the field, but he is urging those concerned to stop due to safety reasons.
He said individuals could sustain injuries while playing on the field, specifically on the outfield area because the ground has yet to be leveled.
Rogolifoi said the ground level located at right field about 10 feet behind the infield is low compared to other areas on the field.
He said the area still needs to be backfilled with topsoil to level the ground and let the grass spread. He, however, said he is not sure when the work will be done.
The field was recently turned over to the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, the head department of the DSR.
Phase I of the field project was recently completed and Phase II consists of bidding for the construction of the dugouts, toilets, walkways, parking lot, and announcer’s booth.
The new field will relieve the congestion at the current home of the Junior, Senior, and Big League teams who share Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field in Oleai along with the Saipan Major League. Teams will also be able to have access to more facilities for practice, and teams from the northern end of Saipan will not have to travel as far to participate in the national pastime. (Shan Seman)
