Lacsina, Con-ui top Hopwood promotion rites
Lyza Marilet Lacsina and Joestin Con-ui topped this year’s Hopwood Junior High School Promotion Ceremony held at the school amphitheater last Thursday afternoon.
Lacsina took the valedictorian post while Con-ui was the salutatorian. Both students were consistent honor students in elementary.
Lacsina credited her mentors for helping her achieve greater heights in her education. Con-ui made a brief speech by thanking his parents, teachers and friends.
HJHS graduated at least 420 students and over 100 of them received recognition for their involvement in the President’s Education Program.
Current local recording sensation Amber Mendiola was the keynote speaker during the ceremony. She said as an alumnus of the school, she has come to realize that, once a “Hilitai,” always a “Hilitai.”
Board of Education chair Roman C. Benavente and Education Commissioner Rita H. Inos also gave inspirational messages to the graduates.
Inos said that she is appealing to community leaders for more financial assistance to the Public School System. “We just need a little bit more for our children,” she said.
Guests of honor during the promotion ceremony were Reps. Heinz Hofschneider and Janet Maratita and PSS officers David M. Borja, Rita Sablan, Richard Waldo, Stephen Smith, Tim Thornburgh, and Alfred Ada.
Principal Jim Brewer thanked all the students and wished the graduates good luck, saying he hopes they would bring with them the legacy of being part of the “Hilitai” family.
“To all of you, good luck in all you do, especially in furthering your educational endeavor,” he said.
