Military and Veterans Affairs Office executive officer Ruth Coleman said Monday’s celebration of the Memorial Day would pay tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces.

She said the event, which will be held on May 30 at the Veterans Memorial Park, would honor those members of the armed forces who have passed on. The event will start at 9am.

“We will remember those who served our great nation so that we enjoy the fruits of freedom of a democratic society,” she said.

Coleman said the people of the CNMI “are ever mindful and grateful for the supreme sacrifices made by those gallant men and women who lost their lives ensuring freedom.”

She said the commemoration would honor those who fought and died for peace and freedom. “We abhor war and strive to promote peace and understanding among nations.”

Coleman is asking all veterans, their spouses, family members of those departed veterans, the local marine scouts and the public to join the celebration.

Pacific Winds Concert Band will provide pre-ceremonial music during the ceremony. Gov. Juan N. Babauta will provide opening remarks, while Capt. Paul J. Bushong, commanding officer of the visiting USS Frank Cable, will be the keynote speaker. Retired U.S. Army Col. Juan C. Tenorio will also be one of the guest speakers.

The Department of Public Safety will be providing the 21-rifle salute and U.S. Army Reserve Company E of the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry will lead the taps during the ceremony. Bishop Tomas A. Camacho will lead the benediction at the end of the ceremony.

Master of Ceremony will be SFC Richard Haugh. A briefing on the veterans’ license plates will follow after the ceremony.
