The Northern Marianas College Foundation, the fundraising arm of the college, has installed two new board members—Charles Cepeda of Pacific Trading Company and Ben Babauta of DFS Saipan. The incoming members replace outgoing board members J.M. Guerrero and Jerry Facey.

“We are very happy to have these experienced businesspeople and dedicated community volunteers join our board and we’re going to put them to work right away,” said NMC Foundation president Jerry Tan.

At its board meeting last week, the Foundation announced two upcoming fundraisers: the 3rd Annual NMC Foundation Open golf tournament, which will be held on July 2 at Laulau Bay Golf Resort east and west courses, and the Martin Nievera Concert to be held on July 10 the Hopwood Junior High School amphitheatre. These special events are two major fundraising activities of the Foundation to raise funds for higher education in the Commonwealth. The board’s goal for 2005 is to raise $100,000.

In response to requests from NMC president Tony Guerrero and the Board of Regents, recently the Foundation funded $67,000 in projects to help the college management.

Some $32,000 was used to pay for an NMC management review and desk audit to be conducted San Diego State University Foundation as a requirement of achieving advance status with its Pell grants. The audit will be completed before Fall Semester 2005. In addition, the Foundation funded $35,000 for an independent review of NMC’s financial aid files prior to sending the files to the Department of Education, in keeping with a federal government recommendation.
