Some 108 San Vicente Elementary School students gathered at the Multi-Purpose Center yesterday morning to celebrate their promotion to the junior high level.

Norman Chan Jr. graduated with the highest honors and was awarded the Commissioner’s Award, while the Principal’s Award went to Alvijane Manabat.

In his speech, Chan left the graduates, parents, and educators with just two words: more and better.

“Beyond such things as budgets, beyond teachers certification, beyond broken air-conditioners and shortages in textbooks, the question we always need to hold before us will have to be, ‘What have we done to make every child count?’”

Chan extended his appreciation to the Public School System, the Board of Education, the graduates, teachers, and administrators. “Your efforts cannot be measured. It is a lot. For making sure that every child counts, I say more and better.”

Expressing pride in being a Canary, Manabat recognized their school mascot and the meaning behind the word. “We were being trained to be Canaries…this Canary has learned to sense, to feel, to think, and to act. I am proud to be a canary of [SVES],” she said.

Peter Tenorio, who was recognized as one of the top 10 most outstanding students, took the stage to share his memories of his teachers and friends, which he said he would always cherish.

“At the start of the year, our teachers told us that we were embarking on a journey of discovery. There are a hundred students in this room participating in this ceremony,” Tenorio said. “These are 100 sophisticated and complex organisms, whose incredible power and possibilities from each of us is equal to more than a thousand of the most advanced computers of today. That is immense power. That is incredible possibilities. That is us. And we are the children of yesterday’s dream.”

Graduates were awarded the presidential award for academic excellence, presidential award for academic achievement, core curriculum medals of honor, peace builders award, citizenship award, and perfect attendance award. (Cassie DLG Fejeran)
