After an absence of a couple of years, the Powerade Team Tennis Tournament returns to action this month at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

Sponsored by Coca-Cola Beverage Co., (Micronesia), Inc., which is the exclusive distributor of the energy drink, and organized by the Fil-American Tennis Association, the unique tennis competition will kick off on June 15 and conclude on June 26.

According to FILATA president Elmer Guzman, the Powerade-sponsored event makes use of the team tennis format, which is entirely different from the other competitions held on island.

“We encourage our tennis comrades to join playing this wonderful event, for the best part of having a team tennis is the enjoyment of playing multiple games against different teams, and the spirit of developing playing skills as a team and not as an individual,” he said.

Five teams participated in the inaugural team tennis tournament in 2000. Due to insistent public demand, the competition was repeated the next year with an even stronger field of eight teams.

Guzman said like the first two years of the tournament, this year’s participating teams will carry the different quench-thirsting flavors of Powerade.

Registration for the 2005 Powerade Team Tennis Tournament is now ongoing. Entry fee is set at $10. For more information, contact FILATA secretary Joy Minor at 323-3081.
