New diabetes center set to open
The CNMI’s more than 3,000 diabetes sufferers would not have to wait long for the opening of the new office of the CNMI Division of Public Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.
Program manager Lynn Tenorio said the renovation of the center had just been completed and her staff moved their office equipment into the new facility last week.
She, however, said that the office is not open to the public yet but assured diabetes sufferers in the Commonwealth, along with their families, that the center will be opened soon.
Tenorio said they have yet to install the center’s communication infrastructure such as DSL lines for Internet research. She said as soon as they put all of these in place, people who want to research online about diabetes could go to their office and use their facilities.
“Realistically, the facility will not be readily available for the community in a month because we want it first to be presentable,” she said.
Tenorio said the center would also offer classes at its new rooms. She said, however, that the center still needs a stove and a refrigerator to complement its classes in nutrition for diabetes patients.
The renovation of the center came from funding through the CNMI’s tobacco tax. Tenorio said the entire renovation project lasted a year and half, starting with the acquisition of the necessary funds and the design of blueprints for the new center, with actual construction beginning in December and completed in March.
Tenorio said the new center would also serve as the new administration office of the CNMI Public Health nutritionist.
