Masters continue winning ways over Aussies
A day after downing Guam on their home turf, the Saipan Masters II team annihilated members of the Australian delegation to the Pacific Islanders Masters Tournament by a score of 23-3 yesterday to earn their second win of the hardball campaign.
Longtime local hitter Ben Mesa led the charge for the cagey veterans with a stellar 4-for-5 performance over the Australian Dodgers at the plate that included a grand slam, while player/coach Tony Rogolifoi cleared the fence with a two-run shot and tallied three plate crossings. One of the team’s top pitchers notched a win on Paseo Field, as Ben Duenas followed Dulei’s success with some of his own to keep the dream alive by sending the Dodgers to 0-2.
While the Saipan Masters II are still undefeated at 2-0, their partners on the Saipan Masters I squad suffered their second defeat at the hands of the Guam Masters by a 22-4 score.
The pitching staff of the Saipan Masters I was dinged with a couple of big hits in back-to-back innings as the Guam Masters went yard with a two-run shot in the fourth and another two-run jack in the fifth.
In their opening matches, the Saipan Masters II relied on the arm of the CNMI’s second all-time strikeout machine Kaleb Dulei, who gave up only a pair of runs on seven hits in the complete game in the 5-1 victory.
The Saipan Masters I team didn’t experience the same success, as they took one on the chin against the Australian Dragons by allowing the team from Down Under to score 12 runs off of 13 hits in the 12-1 loss.
