Police arrested a 19-year-old Chinese motorist whose vehicle struck a fixed object and a police car as he sped off to evade arrest for reckless driving early Sunday morning.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric David said that police officer Daniel Smith was pursuing Yong Xue Cui, who was headed northbound on Beach Road, Chalan Laulau, for alleged reckless driving.

During the chase, the suspect’s silver Toyota Corolla ran off the roadway and struck a fixed object, David said. When the vehicle backed up, it hit Smith’s police vehicle. The police officer then managed to block the suspect’s vehicle.

It turned out that Yong Xue Cui was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. Police charged Cui with reckless driving, DUI and eluding a police officer.
