The Japanese imperial couple’s visit to Saipan later this month is expected to attract some 200 members of the international media, according to the government.

Press secretary Peter A. Callaghan said the Japanese media alone would send some 100 representatives.

“The visit will be covered live by the Fuji TV network,” said Callaghan.

Also, U.S.-based and international media outfit such as The New York Times, Associated Press, CNN, and BBC will cover the event.

Their majesties, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, are set to arrive on Saipan on June 27 to pay tribute to the casualties of World War II. They are scheduled to depart on June 28.

Callaghan said press centers will be open from June 26 to June 29.

Authorities have selected the Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach to host the media for the event.

Callaghan said the hotel’s Hibiscus Hall will be reserved for the Japanese media while the Claret Room is designated for all other media.

Meantime, Callaghan said that all media representatives wanting to cover the royal couple’s visit are required to fill up a “media credential form” at www.mymarianas.com.

He said media credentialing is required by the U.S. Secret Service, which will deploy its personnel to secure the imperial couple during their visit on the island.

Last month, members of the Secret Service and their counterparts from Japan began their inspection of sites to be visited by the imperial couple.

A task force that arranges all the details about the upcoming visit is headed by Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente.
