The CNMI Democratic Party may have a new candidate for vice governor this morning, according to the party’s gubernatorial bet.

Former governor Froilan Tenorio said that he would be meeting today with the party’s possible replacement for Vicente Camacho, who suffered a massive stroke on May 18.

Tenorio said he and David Sablan, chair of the committee to elect the Tenorio-Camacho tandem, discussed the move with Camacho’s family when they visited his former running mate in the hospital Monday night.

“We met with several members of [Camacho’s] family. We told them we’re very sorry, but we have to move on. They understand,” he said.

He reported that Camacho’s condition seemed to have some slight improvement as of Monday night. But even if he should recover, he could not be expected to proceed with the planned candidacy, Tenorio said.

The former governor also disclosed that the Democratic Party was eyeing at least two possible replacements. He refused to disclose their names.

Asked if the party was considering Sen. Luis Crisostimo, Tenorio replied: “Definitely not.”

Crisostimo, who lost the party’s endorsement for his gubernatorial bid, has formed his own political party called the “Popular National Democratic Party.”
