The Fil-American Tennis Association has put off the start of the 2005 Powerade Team Tennis Tournament to allow the island’s youth netters returning home from competition on Guam to participate.

FILATA secretary Joy Minor said the tournament has moved its kick-off date from June 15 to June 17 to accommodate the 11 youth tennis players representing the CNMI in the North Pacific Qualifying Event starting this Monday at the U.S. territory.

Making up the CNMI’s NPQ team coached by Reo Arriola are Tim Quan, Nicolas Son, Ralph Buenaventura, Keith Gabaldon, Ji Hoon Heo, Russell Buenaventura, and Calvin Yang in the boys category. Girls seeing action are Mayuko Arriola, Vivian Lee, Lila Mailman, and Audrey Motto.

Minor said the 2005 Powerade Team Tennis Tournament, sponsored by Coca-Cola Beverage Co., (Micronesia), Inc., which is the exclusive distributor of the energy drink, would be played at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

Earlier FILATA president Elmer Guzman said that the Powerade-sponsored event makes use of the team tennis format, which is entirely different from the other competitions held on island.

He said five teams participated in the inaugural team tennis tournament in 2000. Due to insistent public demand, the competition was repeated the next year with an even stronger field of eight teams.

Guzman said like the first two years of the tournament, this year’s participating teams will carry the different quench-thirsting flavors of Powerade.

Registration for the 2005 Powerade Team Tennis Tournament is now ongoing. Entry fee is set at $10. For more information, contact Minor at 323-3081.
