Attention cage belles
The Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands will soon open a women’s basketball league and announced Thursday that a meeting followed by scrimmages will be held today at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
BANMI board member Debbie Gerads encourages all players interested in playing in the upcoming league as well as trying out for the CNMI Women’s team, which will compete in this year’s 22-and-under Micronesian Basketball Tournament, to attend today’s session beginning 10am.
The 22-and-under tournament will be held on Saipan this November and will feature teams from Guam, Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
Meanwhile, the start of the Women’s Basketball League has been pushed back.
During Thursday’s BANMI meeting, Gerads informed other board members that many players who are interested in competing are off island for the summer.
During an earlier meeting, BANMI member Mike White raised the possibility of the association subsidizing the financial needs of the league in hopes of promoting women’s basketball in the Northern Marianas. With that, teams will just have to pay an entrance fee of only $200.
Gerads also said that players who have yet to get settled into a team could sign up as individuals with a fee of $20.
