Guillermo Yansan and Tanya Dela Cruz won the grand prize in the adult and children divisions respectively of last Sunday’s Pistang Pinoy 2005 singing contest.

The competition was a quest for a Filipino pop idol in the CNMI.

The 38-year-old Yansan bagged the first prize in the adult category after his rendition of the Basil Valdez original Muling Buksan ang Puso. He took home $500-worth of gift packages from Tan Holdings Corp.

Dela Cruz, who, like Yansan, also won $500-worth of gift packages from THC, wowed the audience with her version of Verna Lisa’s Magkaisa, the song that was composed and made the de facto theme song of the Philippines’ 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.

Other winners of the singing competition were Miki Nadia Dela Cruz, 2nd runner up; Nikki Canape, 3rd runner up; and Akeiko Dela Cruz, 4th runner up in the children’s division. For the adult division, the other winners were Jay Jaraplasan, 2nd runner up, and Ernie Villalas, 3rd runner up.

For the dance competition, CNMI Power ruled the dance floor as they showcased the best Filipiniana and folk dance. They bagged the $200 cash prize. Second runner-up was Bayani Association and MIFICPA, while KAMPIL took third place.

Hundreds of Filipinos gathered last Sunday to show unity among their fellow countrymen as they commemorated the Philippines’ 107th Independence Day at the Civic Center in Susupe.

Different Filipino organizations participated in the event, manning booths selling affordable and sumptuous Filipino delicacies.

Philippine Consul General Wilfredo Maximo and consul Wenceslao Gayola opened the festivities. Among the entertainers were Cathy Lalaine Pagapular, Kenji, Matt Elbo Jr., UB TV Teens, Batch 3 Accounting Class graduates, Baby Pink, Glenn Mesina, Danny Domingo, Jr., Evolution Band, Allen Mijares, Knight Owls Band, Thailand Association, KAMPIL, and Ingrid Sanchez.

Pistang Pinoy 2005 was held in collaboration with the Philippine Consulate General, Philippine Overseas Labor Office, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, United Filipino Organization, and Overseas Filipino Workers Advisory Council.
