An administrative assistant could not believe she had won the grand prize in the Saipan Rotary Club’s Las Vegas Night raffle held Saturday at the Aqua Resort Club.

Lynnie Meriveles, 35, won a brand new 2005 Toyota Camry, which, according to Toyota Atkins Kroll Inc. president Robert Hernandez, has a sticker price of $28,000. Hernandez said the car is currently the top selling vehicle in the mainland.

Rotary president Harry Blalock, together with Microl Corp. general manager Doug Brennan and Hernandez, handed over the keys to Meriveles yesterday during the club’s regular weekly meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

Meriveles, who has been working on Saipan the past seven years and is now connected with Construction and Material Supply Inc., thanked Rotary members and told them to produce more tickets for next year’s Las Vegas Night.

Her husband, Gary, and daughter, Sybil, joined Meriveles in the turnover ceremony. Her husband said his wife’s luck is a blessing to their family. She said she only bought four tickets from the 14 booklets she took from CMS president Dennis Yoshimoto, also a Rotarian.

Although the car is beautiful and elegant, she said she has already talked to Hernandez and Brennan about the possibility of reselling the car as the family is currently constructing a house in Bacolod, Negros Occidental, in the Philippines.

“This is a birthday gift for me and my daughter,” said Meriveles. She said her daughter’s birthday falls on July 9, while her birthday is on July 12.

The Saipan Rotary Club earned $22,000 in ticket sales during the event. Other winners were fellow Rotarians Patrick Calvo and Richard A. Pierce. Tony Pellegrino won the major cash award worth $2,500. The businessman later donated 10 percent of the prize back to the club to help Rotary’s many civic activities.
