Gov. Juan N. Babauta has waived all film permit requirements for agencies and journalists coming to cover the visit of the Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

In a June 7 directive, Babauta said the waiver would be effective from June 26 to June 29, 2005. The imperial couple will be on island on June 27.

“This directive shall only apply to those agencies/journalists that have received official clearance and press credentials from the Secret Service for coverage of official events during the Imperial Visit,” said Babauta.

Further, Babauta urged the Marianas Public Lands Authority and the Coastal Resources Management to waive all film permit requirements during the same period for those agencies and journalists who do not have press credentials to cover officials events, but will be filming related news during their stay in the CNMI.

MPLA requires all groups filming in the islands to apply for a permit. The requirements are a business license, a liability insurance for each member of the shooting crew, and a CRM permit if filming within 150 feet of the high water mark.

The authority also collects a daily fee of $500 for filming in Managaha, or $250 anywhere in the Northern Marianas.

MPLA agreed with the governor’s directive.

“Recognizing this gesture of good will and diplomacy, the MPLA will abide to our governor’s request and waive all filming permit requirements from June 26 to June 29, 2005. We will waive the permits only for journalists who will be covering imperial visit-related news,” MPLA public information officer Ed Arriola Jr. said.
