The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. and the Governor’s Water Task Force mobilized their resources last week and worked to repair six downed wells supplying water to Garapan, averting what would have been an extended water shortage situation in the village.

“If they were not repaired, there would have been a continued water shortage,” said task force head Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente.

Four of the wells are in the Sablan Quarry area in Sadog Tasi; the two others are in Gualo Rai. The wells produce a total of 432,000 gallons of water a day.

According to the Water Task Force, the wells were reported down last Wednesday.

A quick investigation showed that problems were caused by burnt-out motors, control system failures and well-head equipment failure, among others.

Crews worked around the clock to ensure that the extended water shortage is averted. As of Monday this week, crews were repairing the sixth well, which is Sablan Quarry 7 in Sadog Tasi.

A Water Task Force spokesperson said new pumps and motors provided by WTF were installed. Likewise, steel drop pipes were replaced with PVCs to address rusting problems.

There was a slight disruption in water service as power had to be shut off last Saturday because primary and secondary power lines were just above one of the wells being repaired, the Water Task Force said. (PR)
