Santos is Dems’ new bet for lt. governor
The Democratic Party is looking to its new candidate for lieutenant governor, Antonio Aguon Santos, to unify the party.
Former governor Froilan Tenorio, the party’s standard bearer for this year’s gubernatorial election, said he selected Santos to be his running mate because of Santos’ loyalty to the party.
Tenorio explained that, for the longest time, the Democratic party has been divided between those identified with former governor Carlos Camacho and those aligned with former mayor Gregorio Sablan.
A self-admitted ally of the Sablan faction, Tenorio said he hoped that having Santos, who is associated with the Camacho group, as his running mate would help unify the party.
Another reason he selected Santos was the latter’s wide background in education.
An educator for the past 40 years, Santos has served as teacher or principal at various schools in Guam and Saipan. He has also worked as instructor and dean of the Land Grant Program and the Continuing, Vocational and Adult Education at Northern Marianas College.
“He is highly respected in the community. He’s been an educator for a long time. I really mean business about my plans to reform the Public School System. We are going to give teachers a pay raise. The last time they got a salary increment was when I was governor and that was over eight years ago,” said Tenorio.
Santos is currently an adjunct instructor at NMC.
From 1968 to 1970, he was the village commissioner for San Roque. In 1974, he was elected to the 25th Saipan Municipal Council.
He also held various positions in the community including: chairman of the San Roque Parish Council; chairman of the Mt. Carmel School Diocesan Board of Education; and chairman of the Sister Remedios School.
