Operatives recovered live ordnance from a Managaha Island beach and 17 grenades from a Saipan construction site Wednesday afternoon.

The Department of Public Safety’s Explosives Response Team rushed to recover the World War II ordnance. The team safely recovered the explosives.

DPS spokesman Eric David, who is also an XRT operative, said he recovered a 135-mm projectile from a beach on Managaha Island.

Marianas Public Lands Authority’s patrol rangers reported the sighting to police and cordoned off the site to prevent tourists from going near the ordnance. David said the sighting did not cause panic among tourists.

The XRT team also responded to a residential site near Beach Road, Chalan Laulau and recovered 17 live Japanese grenades. He said construction workers unearthed the grenades and reported the discovery to police. Police safely recovered the grenades.
