Bringing home the bacon

Toyota Prius, L.L. Sleese Staks, and Jon March Ong all have one thing in common in last week’s sports—all brought home the bacon via championships in their respective sports.

Prius added the 2005 BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League crown to its pennant title after outplaying Ulloa’s in Game 1 of their final series, 95-87, Wednesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The hybrids rallied behind fallen teammate Jeremy Winkfield to foil Ulloa’s hopes of forcing a Game 2. Winkfield crumpled to the floor in the third quarter after unleashing a monster two-handed slam, but his teammates nonetheless had his back and delivered the championship to the Oleai-based squad.

L.L. Sleese Stakes, meanwhile, spiked the opposition in the 6th Annual Coors Light Four-Person Beach Volleyball League en route to taking home the sand court crown.

The ‘80s phenoms capped their season-long brilliance with a three-set conquest of Smackers Thursday night at the Pacific Islands Club beachside. L.L. Sleese Staks was all over the court in the roughly monthlong event and compiled 9-1 win-loss card to top the 11-team competition.

Ong, for his part, was a Greek sculpture personified in last June 11’s 2005 Northern Mariana Islands Bodybuilding Championships held at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center.

The 28-year-old Saipan Tribune employee displayed muscles and striations aplenty in the final posedown to defeat fellow division champions Jose Ngiraibuuch, Light Middleweight champ and defending overall champ, and Jeff Boyer, the Lightweight titleholder. Ong topped the Middleweight class.

The week in sports also saw the CNMI junior tennis players outclass their counterparts from host Guam, Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia in the North Pacific Qualifying Event.

Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach and host Mobil also advanced to the winner-take-all finals of the 2005 Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Co-ed Invitational Basketball League after turning back Aqua Resort Club and Commonwealth Ports Authority, respectively, Tuesday, also at the Ada Gym.

Hardball action in the Saipan Major League and the Junior, Senior, and Big divisions of the Saipan Little League also continued at the ballfields of Oleai Sports Complex.
