The fiercesome fivesome of Mr. Mistoffelees went for the kill at the Seaside Grill as they beat Just Play in the finals to win the four-person tournament at the Pacific Islands Club on Saturday to kick off the weekend of bumps, sets, and spikes.

After sending Just Play to the ranks of the losers’ bracket, Mark McDonald, Russ Quinn, Laura Burley, Dale Roberts, and Bruce Berline survived their first loss of the tournament when Just Play returned to stun them, 15-11, but Mr. Mistoffelees was not to be denied the top prize as they rebounded with a healthy 7-1 win in the tie-breaker.

“It was fun. I came out to just have a good time with the team. Our expectation was to just have fun along the way and we won—which was nice. Donn Dunlop, Gabriel White, Benylynn Mettao, and Chris Nelson were nice, but they beat us to force the rubber match and that just got us angry. We had a great final which was what the tournament was all about—good games,” said Quinn.

The champions went undefeated in Friday night’s action and wrapped up the round robin action on Saturday with a flawless 3-0 record before cruising through the winner’s bracket all the way to finals.

Mr. Mistoffelees raced through the winner’s bracket with a convincing 15-7 win over the Guam Nationals before sending Dunlop, White, Mettao, and Nelson of Just Play to the rocky road of the loser’s bracket with an evenly matched 15-12 contest.

While Mr. Mistoffelees was waiting for a challenger in the championship, Just Play waged three hand-to-hand battles in the sand first before vying for the title. After eliminating the Fab 4 from the tournament with a narrow 15-11 victory, Just Play followed it up with a one-sided 15-8 win over the Guam Nationals.

All that stood between Just Play and a rematch with Mr. Mistoffelees was a match with Jon Cramer, Linda Anastacio, Rannel Calexterio, Apple Samson, and returning champion Tomo Obata of Anything Goes.

The star-studded match never amounted in much of a contest as Just Play prevailed with a strong 15-5 win over the AG’s, and carried the momentum in to the finals by handing Mr. Mistoffelees their first defeat of the tournament, 15-11.

A combination of Mr. Mistoffelees’ crisp execution and the fatigue of six games in the double-elimination round began to settle in as Just Play failed muster more than one point in the 7-1 tie breaker.

Aside from securing the sandy bragging rights for finishing first, Mr. Mistoffelees bagged $240 in cash, $50 in gas coupons from Shell Marianas, and five PIC Day Passes for two.
