The championship round of the 2005 Powerade Team Tennis Tournament is all set and will be in the books tonight after Jagged Ice battles Strawberry-Melon at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

Jagged Ice finished with a 10-8 win-loss card and was first to secure their championship round ticket, while Strawberry-Melon joined them after edging Gold Rush in the team standings.

Strawberry-Melon and Gold Rush also posted 10-8 records, however, Gold Rush trailed by just one point 107-108 in the total scoring.

Gold Rush let a golden opportunity slip out of their hands. Facing Mango-Orange in the final day of the elimination round Thursday night, Gold Rush made a solid charge but came up just a bit short despite taking three of the five matches played.

Gold Rush captain Alex Martin and Abet Encarnacion opened their team’s bid by doubling up Didith Julve and Noel Dognidon 8-4.

Mango-Orange managed to even the count when youth sensation Mayuko Arriola beat Hector Benitez, 8-3, but favor soon returned to Gold Rush’s corner after Dino Jones and Edwin Maratas stopped Delia Jones and Ricky Castro in convincing fashion, 8-1.

At that point, Gold Rush had assured themselves a win to improve to 10-8 and was just a point behind Strawberry-Melon, but unfortunately, their golden run turned into bronze as they failed to suit up a team for a mixed doubles match, which they lost by default, giving Young Son and Chuck Sayon a stroll-in-the-park victory.

Even if a team was assembled and lost the match against Sayon and Son, had they scored just two points, Gold Rush would’ve secured a berth in tonight’s finale.

Gold Rush finished in third place while Lemon Lime and Mountain Blast both finished with identical 9-9 records. Fruit Punch, Green Squale, and Mango-Orange posted 8-10 marks.

Championship play begins at 5pm and will be immediately followed by an awards banquet.

The Powerade Team Tennis Tournament is sponsored by Coca Cola Beverage Co. and is organized by the Fil-American Tennis Association.
