Masters cage action heats up over weekend
The 35-and-over and 45-and-over Masters Basketball League resumed Friday night, and after weekend’s games concluded Saturday evening, one thing for sure is the 2005 season is building to become an exciting one.
On Friday, the Old Aces of the 35-and-over league played with poise in crucial times and kept their composure before holding off a strong push by Sadunaaro at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium, 83-78.
The two teams were neck and neck throughout most parts of the game, with Sadunaaro holding an 18-17 lead after he first period and Old Aces swinging the slim favor to their corner at halftime, 39-38.
Already with nine points to his name, Old Aces shooter picked up the slack and began drilling jumpers from all corners, adding another seven points to his name while lifting his team to a 63-58 advantage.
Sadunaaro would not go away though, and little by little, chipped into the Old Aces lead. Frances Rebuyon challenged the Old Aces big men and got six quick points in the early moments of the final period.
Sabunaaro closed the gap, but missed on a golden opportunity in the dying seconds after failing to make a wide open shot in the paint. The shot would have given the team the lead, but instead, Old Aces regrouped and got clutch free throws from Junior Renguul to seal the deal.
Renguul led Old Aces with 22 points while Elias Rangamar and Luzama supported with 19 and 18 points.
Rebuyon led Sabunaaro with 16 points while Mike Surima and Ed Palma contributed 14 and 11 points.
The 35-and-over league continued with two games Saturday, with the Legends edging Sadunaaro, 104-98, and the NMC Proa beating Natibu, 103-90.
League action continues this Friday with Proa and Sadunaaro going head to head at 6:30pm.
The 45-and- over league featured the Legends creaming the Old Aces, 83-52, Friday night and the Heinz and Dave Proa edging Sars, 79-69, on Saturday.
