Point Break goes all out for one-day competition
As the most dedicated local surfer knows, it’s hard to resist the call of ‘Mother O’ when the waves crashing on the reef by Sugar Dock beckon, but for one day in July, they will have the ultimate opportunity to take command of 40,000 gallons of H2O per minute upon a knee board as the Point Break Challenge returns to the Pacific Islands Club in San Antonio for the seventh year.
This time around, the PIC is teaming up with Duty Free Shoppers and the folks at PowerAde to provide tricksters an outlet for their creative talents, but unlike in previous editions of the surf-athon, riders will have to display their talents on one day of competition as opposed to the three-month series.
The all-or-nothing challenge gets underway in a little more than two weeks as the masters of the wave blaster rip into the liquid animal on Saturday, July 23, at 5pm. The competition is open to everyone, regardless of experience, and while there is no age limit, the entrants will be divided into age categories.
The males and females will compete separately in the 12-and-under, 13-17, and the 18-and-over divisions, and will be judged based upon their performance in three rounds of riding the tide.
In the first round, surfers will have a minute and a half to show their stuff in the day’s freestyle portion. In the second round, the riders have 60 seconds to pull off their most difficult maneuver in the Big Trick category, followed by a third round of anything goes—including the middle barrier that separates the lanes.
“We are really looking forward to hosting the event again. If the turn out is anything like last year we are going to have an awesome display of tricks from a group of fearless Flow Riders,” said PIC activities manager Dennis Tababa.
The top three finishers of each category stand to take home an assortment of prizes from the PIC, DFS, and PowerAde. The cost to enter the competition is $15, and registrations will be accepted through the surf-off.
