International field to challenge Peace
Long-distance runners from Korea, Japan, Philippines, and the United States will come together in the name of peace this weekend as Sports Link, Korea is a couple of days away from kicking off the inaugural running of the Peace Half-Marathon to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, and the founding of the Republic of Korea on Aug. 15, 1948.
The Marianas Visitors Authority, Korean Tour Association of Saipan, the Segye Times, Kyunghyang Daily News, Asiana Airlines, and World Resort have joined forces to offer the 13.1-mile challenge, and a large showing of athletes is expected to answer the call.
After a brief warm-up and some stretching, the long-distance runners will begin their southern journey from the American Memorial Park at 6am Sunday, July 10, as Saipan’s second half-marathon of the year, and according to KTAS office executive Cathy Bang, the organizers are hoping for a sizable turnout for the 10-km race as well.
“We see that everyone is running around Saipan and that’s one of the reasons why we are having the fun runs,” said Bang
According to Bang, the KTAS would like everyone to come and participate in the event and is extending a special invitation to government employees and members of the Department of Public Safety.
After the final runner crosses the finish line, the crowd will relax with an awards ceremony and lunch at the park. The top three winners of each category stand to eat their lunch with a smile on their faces as first place pockets $300, second takes $200, and third goes home with $100.
As with all other major on-island events, organizers are hoping for an outpouring of local support from government and private companies to help make the event a success. The runners will also be appreciative of the volunteers manning all eight of the aid stations for their well wishes and water along the way.
For those who like the thrill of competition but aren’t inclined to compete in a 13.1-mile run, there is still an opportunity to volunteer though the races are just a couple of days away. It’s not too late to register for the race either, as runners and volunteers can stop down to the MVA and fill out an application or simply fax the entry form to the Koreans Travel Association of Saipan at 234-5826. If neither of the plans suffice, registration may be completed on race day at 5am at the AMP.
The cost to enter the half-marathon is $30, while those opting for the 10-km distance need only pay $20. For more information about the inaugural Peace Half-Marathon, contact the MVA by calling 664-3200, or by calling the KTSA at 234-5827.
