CFL officials set date for 2005 kickoff
After months of watching swimmers hit the water, batters hit the ball, and dirt bikes hit the track, local football fans with a need for contact sports will soon be soothed by the sounds of bone-jarring, open-field tackles as the Commonwealth Football League’s board of directors has decided that September will be the start of the CNMI’s “Tackle An Opponent” month.
While the official schedule is currently on the drawing board, the start of the season has been inked for Saturday, Sept. 24, at 10am. The teams have not yet been added, but league officials believe that they will be getting confirmation of this year’s gridiron gladiators soon.
Change is as much a part of the history of the CFL as helmets and pads, and this year is no different as the players and officials are planning to move the venue from the Commonwealth Ports Authority Airport Field to the new digs in the center of the state-of-the-art track and field facility in Oleai.
According to government and league sources, the grass in the center of the track is masking an uneven playing surface that was poorly prepared by the contractors, but the road to topnotch touchdowns and stimulating sacks may still pass through the Beach Road location.
According to the CFL schedule-makers, the 2005 season includes two games across the channel on Tinian, as rumors about the neighboring island’s team have progressed to them already holding practices.
Tinian head coach Andre Winston could not be reached for comment, but it’s clear that Saipan will not be the only island in the CNMI with a team this year.
Team representatives, league officials, and those interested in forming football teams are invited to join the CFL’s next board meeting this Tuesday, July 26, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post along Beach Road at 6pm.
