Fil-Taga Golfers Association president Ted Malaran said the club’s July and August Ace of the Month tournaments would serve as qualifiers for the bigger and richer Ryder Cup-type event set for two consecutive Sundays in September.

Malaran said the club’s board of directors met last week and ironed out the final details of the would-be annual tournament being staged together with the Saipan Golfers Association.

Dubbed the SGA-FilTaga Cup, the tournament will be held on Sept. 4 and Sept. 11, with the first Sunday adopting a best ball format play and the second Sunday featuring match play one on one. The September tournament will be held for the benefit of the Northern Marianas Islands Junior Golf League.

The winner will get to keep the perpetual trophy plus $1,000 in cash. Malaran said FilTaga initiated the Ryder Cup-type tournament and SGA was chosen as its partner because of former Superior Court presiding judge Ed Manibusan, who is one of SGA’s officers aside from being one of the proponents of the NMIJGL.

FilTaga’s July Ace of the Month will be held today, July 17, at the Coral Ocean Point Resort golf course.

According to tournament director Jun Dela Cruz, show time is set at 11am with tee-off time scheduled at 11:30am.

Established in 1993, Fil-Taga’s tournaments operate under a computer-controlled handicap system that creates parity among players in the A and B Flights.

A FilTaga Ace of the Month champion is crowned monthly. Regular tournaments are scheduled once a month, normally every third Sunday. Green fees are in the $35 to $40 price range for most tournaments.
