Rains spoiling King of the Diamonds
The six teams vying for supremacy in the second round of the 2005 King of the Diamonds softball tournament will have to wait another day before resuming play, and if Mother Nature continues with its showers, action may have to be pushed back even further.
Tournament officials were hoping to resume play yesterday evening at the Tan Ge Softball Field, however, the facility was in no condition to accommodate games, as it was drenched by heavy rains.
Tournament coordinator Newman Techur earlier said games would be pushed back until mud puddles disappear from the playing field.
Complicating matter more is the fact that several players in the tournament are also scheduled to leave for the 2005 Palau South Pacific Mini Games this Friday.
Techur said he will meet with MARPAC, the main sponsor of the highly-competitive tournament, to discuss matters with regards to possible options of resuming play during the period of when players are off island, or waiting for the return of the players from the Mini Games.
The second round kicked off on Sunday, with three games being completed and another halted in the second inning due to rain.
Among the teams taking part in the tourney include first round champion No Ka Oi, Survivors, Brotherhood, Manhoben, Par D Pak, and Salty Boys.
The third round is expected to be held sometime in mid-October.
The team with the most points after the three rounds will earn a trip to the King of the Diamonds Grand Finale in Palau from Nov. 10 to 14. The competition will feature Saipan’s top gun, as well as the champions from Palau and Guam slugging it out for supremacy.
