OTRYC meets for drills and frills
While the stormy season for sailing the seven seas is close to making conditions in the local waters less than ideal, the Over the Reef Yacht Club is educating its members about proper storage, boating safety and trying to squeeze in a few more days of fun under the sun.
During their July meeting, the club members and officers discussed everything from paperwork to preparation by touching on their treasurer’s report, NMASA and the South Pacific Mini Games, the upcoming typhoon season, and their August event.
“As the typhoon season is nearing, we never know when something may be coming our way,” said Lisa Black.
According to Black, the plan for the patrons is to head down to the boats when a typhoon is on the way in order to ensure that the masts are down, tramps are down [if needed], boats are tied down, and all is secure.
“We can always use extra help at this time, even from those of us that are non-boat owners. Please don’t hesitate to contact someone to offer help. It would be very much appreciated,” she said.
The best people to contact to lend a hand are Tony Stearns, Mike Johnson, Lino Olopai, Ron Smith, or Black.
Aside from dwelling on the gray days, the sailors discussed holding their second Fun Day on Sunday, August 7, to greet a number of members and volunteers from the 2005 Laguna Regatta who will be back on-island after their vacations.
“We would like to invite, more specifically, the Grafs, Ken, Sue, Bruce, the Robinsons, the Baraks, or anyone else who was so helpful to us for the Laguna Regatta. We will all meet at the boats, set up, and hopefully get out by 9:30am,” said Black.
Black said that the focus will be on fun, and that while it isn’t necessary, it would be helpful to RSVP.
