Full slate of weekend games for MDX
Following all the pomp and circumstance of its opening last Sunday, the 2005 MDX Amateur Radio Club Inter-Color Basketball League returns this weekend with a full slate of games today and tomorrow at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
In today’s curtain raiser, Poohdeni would take on 287 Club-Verizon beginning at 6pm. Both teams are familiar against one another, as Poohdeni is made up of the core players of Visminda, which battled Cabalen in the finals of the 2003 UFO Basketball League. 287 Club-Verizon is mostly made up of players from Cabalen.
Leading Poohdeni’s charge are 2003 MVP Pando Muleta, human flyswatter Jawn Joyner, rugged forwards Danny Bicera and Emil De Belen, and center Ed Cosino. The team would also be bolstered by the additions of Jorge De Guzman and youth cager Lester Babauta.
287 Club-Verizon, meanwhile, would be headlined by towers Ronald Delos Reyes, Jhun Alipio, and Darwin Barbo. The team also managed to shore up its outside shooting by recruiting long-tom artists Sonny “Sunshine” Ranola and Randy Arconado.
The second game, set to start at 7:30pm, then pits Saipan Ice caging runner-up Micronesian Brokers Inc. against UFO team SMF-Shell-Seabridge.
MBI would be bannered by promising slotman Elbyn Cecilia, silky smooth swingman Jeff Garcia, and bull-strong forward Bernard Samson. SMF would again be counting on the likes of high-flyers Leo Itaas and Toto Banatasa and outside gunners Sonny Lerio and former Laguna stalwart Johnny Badilles.
On Sunday, Mobil would try to bounce back from its opening day loss to defending champion Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense by taking on Cavite-Country House beginning at 4pm.
Expected to lead Mobil once again is electrifying guard Andres “Jhun” Estolas, while Cavite would be topbilled by Erol Peredo, Delwyn Cortez, and Bernard Montano—all former Mobil players.
SIP then tries to go up 2-0 in the team standings when it takes on first-day loser Subway-Cola Cola in the 5:30pm second game.
Coach Rick Alegre would again lean on the scoring exploits of James Villacrusis, Jason Amado, and Edzell Mendoza, while Subway would try to slow down their opponents’ explosive offense by countering with Mike Achas, Jun Tabora, and Beethoven “Bong” Sese.
