The Emergency Management Office cautioned sea tour operators, divers and swimmers yesterday to avoid venturing near exposed reefs due to high surf conditions, even as tropical storm Matsa headed away from the Marianas region.

The EMO said surf intensified to hazardous levels along south-facing exposures on Saipan, Tinian and Rota beginning Sunday.

Yesterday, it said surf reached 7 to 9 feet along south-, southwest- and west-facing exposures on the islands.

“Wind and wave conditions support dangerous rip currents. Rip currents are life threatening to anyone entering the surf,” the EMO said.

The EMO said the storm was moving northwesterly yesterday away from the Marianas. It predicted that swells generated by the storm would subside by nighttime and today.
