Navy continues probe on well contamination

The U.S. Navy continues to investigate if there was a connection between a recent jet-fuel pipeline leak and a nearby water-well contamination in Toto last month.

Using a process called gas chromatography to fingerprint the samples taken, lab tests were unable identify the material.

However, the contamination material evaporated rapidly from the well and did not reconstitute itself, further indicating there is no ground-water contamination. In order for the jet fuel from the leaked pipeline to contaminate the well, it would have had to first contaminate ground water.

The pipeline has been repaired.

The investigation remains ongoing. The Navy plans to conduct further tests after the water well has been pumped out. (PR)
