The Residential Energy Assistance Challengeof the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs is making another energy-saving product more affordable for the community this weekend.

On Saturday, Aug. 13, REACh will partner with YCO Do-It-Best in Chalan Piao to provide free reflective roof coating to 17 low-income families in Saipan and to offer the product at reduced cost to the rest of the general public.

REACh will be at YCO Do-It-Best from 8am to 12pm to demonstrated energy efficient products, answer questions about roof coating, and to provide live testimonials from REACh mascot “Officer Ophing Powers” and other residents who have applied the product to their homes.

The roof coating will also be offered at reduced cost throughout the day. At 9am, REACh will also select 17 names from among clients of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to receive the free roof coating.

LIHEAP clients who attended REACh financial management and energy conservation workshops from March to July 2005 are eligible for the drawing. Clients do not have to be present to win. The Department of Public Works Energy Division will also be on site with demonstrations, information, and to distribute compact fluorescent lights with qualified purchases.

Reflective roof products reflect the sun’s heat and prevent it from entering a home or building, reducing the amount of electricity needed to run air conditioning. Reflective roof products promote cost and energy savings, downsized A/C equipment, lowered surrounding air temperature, and decreased pollution.

REACh is a federal grant funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families. (PR)
