TOC releases new winners
Just a couple of days after the 10th Annual Tournament of Champions provided golfers from around the region with the biggest round on the links at Laolao Bay Golf Resort, the organizers promoted one of its duffers to the top of his class.
According to TOC chairman Rodney Klinge, there was a change made to the top of the standings in the B Flight, as first place finisher Sung Hyuk Ra was joined by Ray Dela Cruz of Tinian with an overall score of 167.
“Although at the banquet, Mr. Ra received the first place awards and Mr. Dela Cruz received the 2nd place awards, after further review, the Tournament of Champions organizing committee has elected to present dual first place awards to both players as a sudden death playoff was impossible prior to closing the tournament,” he said.
Amidst a number of unrelated rulings being reviewed by the committee at the close of the tournament in Sunday, Dela Cruz was unaware that he was in a first place tie with Sung Hyuk Ra and left the course.
The rules state that there would be a playoff hole to determine first place, but all attempts to reach Dela Cruz prior to the banquet proved to be unsuccessful. As a result, Dela Cruz and Ra took top honors and Danny Quitugua landed third with a two-day score of 168.
In a related story, the Saipan Tribune reported that Shinori Onoue took third place in the Ladies Flight, but results received yesterday indicated that Michiyo Mizuno finished in second place with an overall score of 163 while Alice Taitano took third with a 179.
