$10K up for grabs in VFW essay competition
A student in the CNMI could bring home a whopping $10,000 worth of savings bonds in this year’s Patriots Pen Essay Competition that is hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
VFW Saipan Post 3457 commander John Davis announced last week the kick-off of this essay competition, which is open to all grades 6 to 8 students in the Commonwealth.
He said students will have the opportunity to compete in the annual essay competition and win thousands of dollars in U.S. savings bonds plus a trip to the U.S. mainland, to be honored at the VFW National Convention.
Davis said students would have to begin competing at the Post level, with the winners advancing to the District level, where they would have to compete with contestants from Guam. District winners would then have to compete at the Department level, which Davis said includes competing with Pacific area contestants.
“The Department winner will compete for more than $66,000 in U.S. savings bonds and an all-expense paid trip to join other national dignitaries attending the VFW National Convention,” said Davis.
Eligible students are invited to write a 300- to 400-word essay on a patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “What Service to Our Country Means to Me.” Davis said the deadline of submission is on Nov. 1, 2005.
Interested students and teachers may contact the Patriot’s Pen chair at VFW through 235-4830 or through Davis at 235-5123 for more information.
