Loyola, Benitez rule Verizon 4.5 doubles
Peter Loyola and Hector Benitez were dynamite at the American Memorial Park tennis courts as they capped their impressive run in the men’s doubles 4.5 of the 3rd Annual Verizon Tennis Cup by taking home the championship Tuesday night.
Loyola and Benitez dominated in the finals and cruised to a straight sets victory over Nanding Cajigan and Ganover Rettin.
With everything going their way, Loyola and Benitez easily grabbed the advantage by taking the first set, 6-1. They then duplicated that effort in the second set and secured the championship hardware with a 6-1 clincher.
Meanwhile, Loyola partnered with Roy Pangelinan in the men’s doubles open and stopped Richard Asuncion and Boyet Minor 6-2, 6-4 in their round robin action.
In other men’s matches, the doctor-doctor duo of Gary Ramsey and Richard Brostrom kept their 3.5 championship hopes alive, advancing to the finals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Bert Nelson and Steve Nutting.
The two are awaiting an opponent, which was expected to be known last night.
Also seeing action in the category were Gurung Yesman and Dr. Alberto Ventura, who pulled the right strings down the stretch and squeezed past Alfredo Quiroz and Boy Cruz 7-5, 7-5 to reach the semifinals.
Feel Kalen and Minor also reached the finals of the 4.0 after leaving on the winning side of a tough three-setter against Fr. Ryan Jimenez and Dodong Espanola.
Kalen and Minor had just enough juice in them to beat Jimenez and Espanola in the first set, 7-5, but the favor was soon returned by the same score to force a third set. Kalen and Minor then clinched a slot in the finals with a 6-4 win.
Also, Edwin Maratas and Goerge Olanda advanced to the semis of the 4.0 by beating Eric Mahinay and Ronnie Lacbayo 6-4, 5-7, and 7-5.
In the only women’s action, Delia Johnson and Letty Jones secured a berth in the finals of the doubles open by getting past a tough charge by Nelia Luna and Lucita Pasana in three sets 6-3, 4-6, and 7-5.
