Sonics, G-I remain perfect in Rotary
The Southern Sonics and Garapan Rollers kept their unbeaten streak alive Tuesday night, clobbering their opponents in the ongoing Saipan Rotary Summer Youth Basketball League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
In the opener, the Sonics got another impressive outing out of Rowell Aranda and Lester Babauta, and took control of the match in the early goings before closing out with a bang en route to an 88-50 victory over Hoops.
Aranda and Babauta came out gunning in the first half and took care of much of the offensive load for the guys from the south, scoring 13 and nine points to spearhead a rout in process.
With the two torching the nets at will and their team defense preventing any big run from Hoops, the Sonics managed to build a 43-26 lead heading into the break.
Action resumed and so did the Sonics’ scoring spree as the team kicked it up a notch and buried more shots to add another 45 points. Aranda picked up where he left off and added another 11 points to his name while Babauta matched his first half performance with another nine points, including another bomb from long range. The two also got solid support as guard Micke Eclevia and Rayner Ferrer combined for 13 points.
Aranda wounded up scoring a game-high 24 points to lead four Sonics in double figures while Babauta and Eclevia finished with 18 and 13 points. Jack Lizama also pumped in 10 points.
Foster Dela Cruz, Angel Palacios, and Woo Joo Jung led Hoops with 11 points apiece.
In the second game, Pedro Iguel and his G-I crew had their way against Toyota Camry and posted their fifth win in as many games with an 86-59 rout.
As in many other games, Iguel put a smile of coach Joe Diaz’s face as he helped his team get off on the right foot with 12 points in the opening half, which ended with the G-Rollers still in reach, 36-25.
Toyota, however, was not able to close the gap as the G-Rollers balanced attack was too much to handle. Iguel relaxed a bit and knocked in just four baskets, but support from teammates was pouring in as nine other players managed to put the ball through the hoop.
Iguel led all scorers with 20 points while Maverick Itibus and Jayvon Tarkong led Toyota with 17 and 14 points in as losing cause.
On Monday, the Capitol Hill Breeze suffered their first defeat at the hands of the G-Rollers II, who broke away from a deadlock score at halftime to leave with a 55-45 victory.
Don Teregeyo came up big for G-II, going off for 10 of his 12 points in the second half to help his squad pull away.
