Jerry Soriano out-banked, combo-ed, and out-shot the entire 10-player field to win the Round Two Mixed Invitational Pool Tournament last Thursday without suffering so much as a scratch to mar his perfect record.

Soriano won all five of his matches during the night of a thousand pockets but saved his best for last as he twice out-dueled Joe Shaffer in back-to-back contests to claim victory at the popular Garapan facility.

Referee Ricky Vertudez said the tournament went well as Soriano first dispatched Jon Morris in the opening round of competition to get a bye before sending eventual third place finisher Jojo Talibong to the loser’s bracket. Soriano then won his first contest with Shaffer and awaited his challenger in the finals.

Shaffer had been unbeaten to that point and rebounded with a win over Talibong in the loser’s bracket final to earn a rematch with Soriano.

Despite deftly dealing his cue, Shaffer’s hopes of an upset were shattered when Soriano sank the onyx orb to the delight of his friends and onlookers.

After taking a one-week hiatus from the local scene, the weekly Round Two 8-Ball matches will move from its familiar Thursday night slot to Friday beginning next week on the Friday, Aug. 19.
